I’m an aspiring photographer, creative director and singer/songwriter. Ever since I realized that I could sing melodies well, I knew music was something I wanted to go after. I grew up hearing my father sing and as a child I loved trying to harmonize with his smooth tenor tone. Although I loved singing, I hid my voice from my peers mostly for fear of being told I didn’t sound as nice as I thought I did, but as I became older, I found the confidence I needed to let people hear what I was capable of. I’ve been dancing from the age of 5 with the Dance Strides Barbados dance company, doing ballet, modern and African dance and I loved everything about being on stage. I got to play many different characters and found a love for embodying whatever music I was dancing to. I am also a track athlete. Sports have been a constant part of my life as well, and having to juggle all these things while still figuring out who I was, made me the disciplined and dedicated person I am today. I grew up to the sounds of r&b, soul, and jazz. Sade was my number one idol from the time I could speak. I find myself being more attracted to older music with heavy neo-soul and jazz influences. To me it’s all better than new music. Today one of my biggest inspirations in the music industry is Lauryn Hill. Her sound and authenticity make her stand out most to me, and the fact that she has never apologized for being who she is. , My performing days are only now beginning to manifest, but I have recorded background vocals for a few Barbadian underground rappers. I wrote my first full song at age 15 and haven’t stopped writing since. Music from Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, John Legend, Alicia keys and Solange have heavily influenced my writing. Solange being one of the newer artists, she embodies that raw emotion found in old r&b music, hence my attraction to her. There isn’t anything in the world I love more than creating and expression and that is why music is so important to me. In one note, you can feel someone’s pain, struggle as well as their triumph and resilience and I think there is nothing more beautiful than that.
